Policy for leaving samples in the CBIC

October 17, 2014

The policy for leaving samples (such as NMR tubes) in the CBIC:

1.) It is expected that you will retrieve any samples that you have placed on automatic sample changers or left nearby any instruments within two days after they have been run on the instrument, even if the sample is no longer of any value to you. The CBIC is not equipped to handle sample waste from multiple labs.

2.) DO NOT take any samples or tubes from the automatic sample changers or nearby any instruments unless you have placed them there yourself. The sole exception to this policy is a clearly marked container indicating “Free used NMR tubes” – these samples (only) have been identified by CBIC staff as having been left behind for more than two days and are fair game for anyone to take, clean, and re-use for their own needs.

We have had some incidents of valuable samples, as well as valuable sample tubes (J-Young tubes, etc.) taken from the automatic sample changers. Even if you think that these samples or tubes have been left for a long period and are no longer wanted, you must wait for CBIC staff make this decision. If the sample area is cluttered and/or samples have been left behind for long periods of time, please don’t hesitate to let CBIC staff know about the issues and we will work to resolve them.

If you have taken any J-Young tubes or samples from anywhere other than the “Free used NMR tubes” container, please return them to the sample changer or give them to CBIC staff.

Thank you,

Eric Paulson
